Using the Bemco Backpacker Oven with Coals from fire.

Ok so the other day I was talking to a gentleman in PA. Well he asked if the Bemco Backpacker Oven would work by using hot coals from a fire. I told him I had never tried it but as long as they staid hot long enough to bake something I did not see why it would not work.
So this morning I decided to try it. I got the fire going in the fire place with some hot coals. I placed the coals in a Stainless steel tray and set the oven over them. The Oven heated up in about 2 min and I kept it at 400 deg F. for 1 hour and 10 min. I added coals to the oven 1 time during that period. I placed the coals on the tray and then slid them under the oven using a knife. It worked out perfectly and now I know I can cook with hot coals from my camp fire. Thanks for the idea Thomas from PA.

  1. Hey,

Just purchased by my Backpacker oven - hoping it will arrive for a trip next weekend at Point Reyes. I've been eying this oven and great videos for a while.

Any recommended recipes for a newbie backpacking baker?

    Thanks,
    Brian.
